What is PPD?
PPD, also know as; paraphenylenediamine is a chemical substance that is used most commonly in both at-home and salon permanent hair dyes.
Darker shades of hair dye contain higher concentrations of PPD than lighter shades, as it creates a natural look while being able to withstand shampoos and perms, without losing its saturation. PPD can not only be used in hair dye, but other substances as well such as; gas, oil, black rubber, printing ink, textile dyes and fur dyes. You may also see the use of PPD in dark coloured temporary henna tattoos, and dark coloured cosmetics.
Why is PPD Bad For You?
PPD is now considered to be one of the most common causes of skin allergen reported in both Canada and USA today. PPD may cause contact allergic dermatitis (eczema) to most sensitive individuals. Anyone exposed to PPD such as; hairdressers and clients may experience these common reactions listed below:
- Itchy or dry rash on upper eyelids
- Blistering and swelling of eyelids, scalp, neck, and face
- Burning or stinging sensation in applied area
Some of these reactions can last anywhere from a few hours to 8 weeks, and if it is prolonged longer than 8 weeks, it is recommended to contact your physician for treatment.
Alternatives
Though most hair dyes contain PPD, there are some hair dyes that do not. For instance, we use the colour line Calura by Oligo made in Montreal. This hair dye is not only PPD free, but ammonia free as well, creating a more safe, less harsh dye for individuals who tend to have sensitive skin.
